The world of Fashion…
It’s a creative, mysterious, and exciting place. However, for those who decide to enter it, it can actually be quite scary. The world of fashion is a crazy, hectic, vicious place. We’ve all heard that many do not survive. However, I’ve started to notice that the people who don’t survive may not be picked at random. Many of us think that as long as we are good at what we do, we will be okay. We will be successful. This is not always true.
The fashion industry is not your typical industry. It’s one that has creativity spilling out at every direction. It requires passion, dedication and hard work. You cannot survive solely on your talent. Many people have talent. Not everybody has the drive they need, to take them to the top. Specialty schools like the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, along with the Fashion Institute of Technology were established to nurture creative minds and to help instill the proper knowledge needed for those wide-eyed dreamers, to embark on the craziest adventure of their lives.
As one of those wide-eyed dreamers, I knew that no one could teach me how to be creative. A person is either creative or they are not. The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, along with the Fashion Institute of Technology are two of the most known fashion schools in America. Throngs of fashion obsessed, girls and boys flock over to these schools, in hopes of landing their dream job and being able to live a glamorous life. What ends up happening to these students? For the most part, they don’t get very far in the industry. If they are lucky enough to even find a job in fashion, they tend to end up with mediocre positions.
They often blame the school for not being good enough, or the industry for being too vicious. This isn’t true either. Many of the “naive” reviews these schools receive can be harsh, and can often times be the reason an aspirational hopeful decides not to attend. My guess is that the writers behind these reviews are people who EXPECTED to be offered a job, right after graduation. In many cases, students who attend fashion schools share the same mentality. “The School has so many connections, why have I not been approached about an internship or a job?”
The school, and the faculty associated with it are not mind readers. It is true that they have incredible connections and they are there to help you get to where you want to be. However, you must approach them. In order to end up where you are truly meant to end up, you must make yourself well-known. You must know how to do things for yourself. Once you master that, success is bound to cross your path.
In order to really build up your credibility and get the attention of those important people you hope to work for in the future, there are little things that you should do, in order to achieve that. Whatever area of creativity your passion lies in, this blog will hopefully help shed light on those little actions you can take, to make all of your dreams come true.
